The Port Alberni Friendship Center is seeking to fill various Housing & Shelter Support Worker positions on a full-time, part-time, and on-call basis.
Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the team leader, the Housing & Shelter Support Worker provides culturally sensitive, non-judgmental support, advocacy, and resource information to residents & guests.
Key Responsibilities: Housing and Shelter Support Worker in Canada
- Helps create a friendly and inclusive atmosphere for every inhabitant, visitor, and member of the community.
- Introduces newcomers and visitors to the layout and community living rules of the residence, and strives to foster friendly interactions among the inhabitants and guests.
- Offers daily information about on-site activities to both residents and visitors, to promote participation during their stay.
- Offers community members individualized care and assistance that is considerate of cultural differences, delivered through empathetic understanding and kind-heartedness.
- Offers information to locals and visitors about the support options accessible through our different community allies, and facilitates the necessary recommendations.
- Offers cultural assistance upon request from the individuals living and visiting there.
- Guarantees the protection and safeguarding of the premises while promoting autonomy, accountability, and the most beneficial way of living for individuals residing in the program and visitors.
- Takes part in aiding and motivating residents and guests to achieve their aims and aspirations.
- Upholds transparent, sincere, and considerate straightforward dialogue with inhabitants, visitors, and fellow employees.
- Offers assistance and mediates disagreements among individuals and collectives living within the community.
- Participate in all compulsory educational sessions, gatherings, and festivities as needed.
- Ensures that all necessary data input for HIFIS and other statistical records is fully and accurately carried out as needed.
- Makes certain that all necessary paperwork is thoroughly filled out as mandated.
Qualifications/Skills & Abilities: Housing and Shelter Support Worker in Canada
- Prior work history includes serving in a direct support role assisting individuals facing multifaceted challenges, including those grappling with financial hardship and lacking stable housing.
- Eager to collaborate with individuals facing challenges related to substance use, as well as those seeking mental and spiritual health, all while employing a perspective that is both informed by an understanding of trauma and focused on leveraging their inherent strengths.
- Cultural Awareness: Understanding of the historical context of indigenous peoples, including the history of the Indian Residential Schools and the foster care system, coupled with a consistently non-judgmental and respectful approach in various circumstances.
- Collaborative individual: possesses the skill to deliver outstanding service to clients and seamlessly cooperate with colleagues, local affiliates, and visitors with utmost professionalism on every occasion.
- The ability to make wise decisions, possess excellent skills in both writing and speaking and uphold privacy and discretion.
- Carry out every task necessary to maintain a safe setting for everyone.
- It is necessary to fully comprehend and feel at ease operating within the parameters of a strategy that focuses on decreasing negative consequences associated with high-risk behaviors, known as a Harm Reduction approach.

Required Training: Housing and Shelter Support Worker in Canada
- Valid First Aid, and Food Safe Certificates.
